The adventure begins…
“Life’s a carousel of different coloured horses. If you see one you like, grab it! That horse is only going to go around the carousel so many times.” Simon Weston

It’s not every day you win a competition, and it’s not every day you are given the opportunity to work for a cause you feel passionate about. But a few weeks ago, I was surprised and delighted to hear that I had been selected to take part in this year’s World of Difference programme and help to raise the profile of the MicroLoan Foundation in Chiswick, a charity which provides small loans and training to women in Africa so that they can start up their own sustainable businesses. My reward for being successful was a big hug from the three men in my life – my husband and two sons, Joshua Freddie (3) and Jack Louis (11 months).

So last week, along with 499 other successful candidates I headed off to the Custard Factory in Birmingham for the Conference. The day was a memorable and life-affirming one. How often do you come face to face with a drummer working for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, a film-maker from Edinburgh helping a post-natal yoga group and the “gorgeous” Gok Wan all in one day? And how often do you get to hear the inspiring words of  Falklands war veteran, Simon Weston, who despite having had 85 operations, continues to motivate people around the country and indeed
around the world?

After the conference, I rushed home so that I could read my boys their bedtime story. Normally we read “Thomas” but last Monday, Joshua said: “tell me about your day, Mummy! What did you do? Did you go on a train? Did you meet anyone?” So I told him all about my experiences. It was probably one of the best bedtime stories he’d ever had.
May the adventure continue….
