When women lead, we all win

International Women’s Day is a day to spotlight the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

Today and everyday, we celebrate the inspirational achievements of women and support those facing poverty to build a better future for their families.

Our campaign, #WhenWomenLead celebrated incredible leading women, both in MicroLoan’s network in sub-Saharan Africa and across the globe.

We collected key pieces of advice from trailblazing women leaders to share across social media. Their words of wisdom left us truly inspired! Be sure to check out some of highlights here.

We’d like to introduce you to Efrida.

For years, she struggled to provide even the most basic necessities for her family. In fact, they were often forced to go hungry for days at a time. Her 12-year-old son had to drop out of school because Efrida was unable to cover the cost of his school fees.

She needed a way to work herself out of this cycle of poverty that had trapped her. One day, Efrida decided to start selling tomatoes. She needed initial funds to get started so decided to join a MicroLoan group. That’s when her reality began to change.
In just two years, things have really transformed.

When we spoke with her, Efrida told us that the biggest changes for her and her family is food security. Not only can she afford to put food on the table, she can feed her family a nutritious diet.

Efrida is not stopping there, she recently started a textile business and it is already making a profit. Her hope is to grow her business further and get a permanent place at the local trading centre.
Her hard work and determination were enough to pull herself and her family out of hardship.

Efrida is a perfect example of how when women lead, we all win.

A huge thank you goes out to the amazing business leaders, and small business owners, who got involved, including the women in MicroLoan’s network who are able to build small businesses with our support.
